Holi is one the most famous festival of India. Holi is celebrated every year during the month of Falgun i.e on February-March by the people of Hindu religion. It is celebrated with immense joy and happiness as it brings a feeling of love and affection among the people. Bright and colourful colours are spread over one another during Holi. At Holi, we meet each other and share love, do a handshake, hug and apply aabir or colour on the forehead and cheeks to each other. We sing some religious songs such as the Fagua geet with the musical instruments like Dholak, Mridal, etc. At this special occasion, we eat special items like Gujiya, Sweets, Chips, Papad, Sweet Halwa, Pani Puri, Dahi Bade, etc. One day before Holi, Holika Dahan takes place.

Holi is one of the widely celebrated festivals of the year just like the Diwali by the Hindus. Many years ago, there was a woman named Holika, who was a devil sister of the devil Hiranyakashyap who tried to burn her nephew, Prahlad in a huge fire by taking him on her lap. Prahlad was a true devotee of Lord Vishnu and Lord Vishnu saved him from the fire, however, Holika was burnt to ashes. From then onwards, Hindu people celebrate the Festival of Holi as a victory of Goodness over Evil.

On this day, there is a public holiday across India where all the banks, schools, colleges, offices and other institutions are closed. We celebrate this festival with immense joy and happiness as it brings a feeling of love and affection among the people. Generally, it starts with morning and ends by night.

Holi is celebrated every year on the beginning day of the Chaitra Month. The entire environment and the nature looks very beautiful and colourful during Holi.

The Festival of Holi started on the last day of Falgun i.e. on February-March by the Holika Dahan in the evening. And in the morning, people start playing with the colours. Children's eagerly wait for this festival as it is a festival of joy and happiness. They start collecting colourful Colours, Balloons (filled with coloured water), Bucket (filled with coloured water), Pitchkari, etc to play Holi. They also collect some wooden sticks, wooden blocks, bamboo, cow-dung cakes etc and make a big heap for the ceremony of Holika Dahan and also for the bonfire.

The people get together at a place in the night and set a bonfire in the huge heap of wooden sticks, bamboo's and cow-dung cakes to celebrate Holika Dahan. People, especially women's sing several ceremonial and religious songs during the Holika Dahan. Everyone enjoy the night by singing, dancing and wait for the morning to play Holi. They sprinkle colours to each other, throw balloons filled with colours, sprays Pitchkari etc. At this special day, everyone forgets the social distinctions, tensions, religion and meets and welcomes each other with joy and with lots of tasty foods and sweets.

When Hiranyakashyap failed in his strategies to kill Prahlad, then he ordered his evil sister Holika to kill Prahlad. Holika then accepted her brother's order and take her nephew Prahlad in a huge fire by taking him on her lap. As Prahlad was a true devotee of Lord Vishnu and so Lord Vishnu saved him from the fire and Holika was burnt to ashes. From then onwards, Hindu people celebrate the Festival of Holi as a victory of Goodness over Evil.

One day before Holi, i.e. on the evening people make a heap of woods, bamboo's and cow-dung cakes on the crossroads and do a bonfire to replicate the myth of burning Holika and celebrate the Holika Dahan ceremony. The people especially the women's sing ceremonial and religious song and also some people make round and round of the burning fire and worship God to get blessed with the prosperity, happiness and good health by burning all the sins, evilness and diseases in the fire. There is also a belief in the Hindu religion that, they massage their body with mustard seed paste and burnt the wastage in the fire so that all skin problems get burnt in the fire and they live a healthy life.

In the next morning after the Holika Dahan, people celebrate the Festival of Colours by getting together at one place. The people started preparations for the Holi a week before the main date. People become highly enthusiastic and happy especially the children's who starts buying different colourful colours a week before Holi. In the morning of Holi, people start roaming to each other’s home and apply aabir to one another. They start playing Holi with their friends, neighbours and relatives with Pitchkari's, colours, small balloons filled with colours.They apply aabir to the forehead of each other, Hug each other and celebrate by eating various delicious foods and dishes like Gujiya, Different Sweets, Pani Puri, Dahi Bade, Aaloo Chips, Banana Chips etc and so many other yummy dishes at each other’s house throughout the day and return back at night.
